When one wears bright red, it’s hard to hide in the snow. Mia could attest to this, once her elder sister had pulled her out of a snow pile more than once, before the elder had went back into the house. It almost disappointed the child - she really had thought she had burrowed deep enough to be out of sight - and so after the last failed attempt, she had settled for making little snowmen instead. Maybe personifications just weren’t meant to blend into snow, not like how the pretty snowy owl that had visited earlier could. Or maybe she needed to ask for a white coat, then she could perfectly imitate the bird.
However, for the moment she chose to focus on her group of snow people. Or, well, what she attempted to make look like people; an adult or older child would probably just see them as haphazard piles of snow, all in varying sizes. Mia added a bit more snow to the one she was currently working on. This one would be like her sister, she decided. The taller one nearby it, that would be Storebror Denmark. Then came Norway, that one had to be next to Storebror, because he said they were best friends. Mia was glad the Dane had a good best friend. Iceland had to be close to Norway, that made sense to her after the stories she had been told. Finland would be between Storebror and Sweden, but closer to Sweden. They liked each other a lot, from her understanding, so this made sense. All that was left to do was to make one more, smaller, snow person. Yes, this one could be her, finally standing with Storebror Denmark again. When she was satisfied with the last pile, she stepped back, inspecting her hard work. There, all the Nordics were back together again.
This was what it would be like when it really did happen, she thought. Wouldn’t it be grand? They would all be happy, she would be happy.
She was sure this is what it would be like.
…She hoped this would happen someday.
“...”
The faintest frown crossed her face, barely there and then gone. She didn’t move at first, staring at the snow piles just a moment more, and then suddenly she found herself kicking one down. The others quickly followed, until she was all alone again, standing in the midst of the snow. With a silent huff, she sat down where she was, falling on her back so that she could stare up at the sky. Just when would they all be together again? Denmark had said she would at least be back with him soon, that this was all only temporary. He had said that months ago. “Months ago” may as well have been an eternity ago to a toddler. She tried to stay patient - being patient is what good little nations did - but… it did get hard, sometimes.
Mia stayed where she was just a bit longer, staring at the sky and wondering what might happen someday, until she heard the telltale sound of snow crunching under shoes. Someone was approaching. She didn’t bother to look to see who it was before she moved, quickly trying to hide behind what was left of one of the bigger snow piles.
